Gonzaga → Coco's Corner → Bahía de los Ángeles
North-central · into the boojum country
Intermediate
| Distance | ~120 mi mixed |
| Duration | 1–2 days |
| Camping | Multi-day |
South of Gonzaga the pavement climbs into the boojum and cardón forest past Coco's Corner. The legendary desert outpost is quieter since Coco passed in 2022, but the stop is still tradition. At Chapala junction, Hwy 5 meets MEX 1; the old Calamajué wash road offers a sandy, rocky dirt alternate for the section if you want to earn it. Then east on the paved spur to Bahía de los Ángeles, one of the great Sea of Cortez views coming over the last rise. From B.O.L.A., the graded dirt south to San Francisquito or inland to Misión San Borja are the real prizes: remote, beautiful, and empty. Fuel at Rancho Grande (Gonzaga), Villa Jesús María, and B.O.L.A. (verify. Supply can lapse). Beach camping at Daggett's or La Gringa. November–April.
