Great Basin: Snake Valley backroads

East-central · Baker / Wheeler Peak
Intermediate
DistanceNetwork · 60–150 mi
Duration1–2 days
CampingMulti-day
Baker (pop. ~60) is the hub for the loneliest riding in the lower 48: graded roads and two-track through Snake and Spring valleys under Wheeler Peak, with the Osceola ghost-town grade over the Snake Range connecting US 50 to US 6/50. Add the paved-but-worth-it Wheeler Peak scenic drive to 10,000 ft and the bristlecone trailheads. Fuel in Baker and Ely only, 63 miles apart with nothing between. Great Basin NP campgrounds plus unlimited BLM dispersed camping in the valleys. Some of the darkest night skies in the country. June–October; valley roads fine most of the year, high crossings snowed in until late spring.
