BLM backcountry byway climbing 10.5 miles and 3,500 ft to the 5,681-ft summit and the 1920s Smithsonian observatory. Rocky, steep, shelf-road switchbacks near the top. A real climb on a loaded bike. Views to the Colorado River on a clear day. Closest real mountain riding west of Phoenix; start from US 60 east of Salome. October–April.
