Climbs 6,000 ft from the Safford desert to spruce-fir at 9,000+ ft. The biggest elevation gain of any road in the state. Paved to Shannon Campground, graded dirt beyond to Riggs Lake and the Columbine end. Cold at the top even in summer; upper road closed mid-November to mid-April. Campgrounds the whole way up.
